Cymuned call on ‘Buy-to-Let’ Prince to rethink

November 23rd, 2006

The communities pressure group Cymuned has written to the Duchy of Cornwall at the advice of Dickie Arbiter (ex-press secretary to Prince Charles) to call upon the Prince to reconsider his intended planning request to develop his new house in Llandovery as a holiday let.

‘Prince Charles appears to have been very poorly advised in this matter,’ says Aran Jones, Cymuned’s Chief Executive. ‘Buy-to-let, particularly for holiday lets, has helped to create a devastating housing crisis in rural Wales, and this remarkably insensitive planning request from the Prince makes it look as though he has little knowledge of, or interest in, the enormous housing problem facing Wales.’

Cymuned believes that the Prince should not submit the planning request, and instead should look at offering part of the 192 acre estate to help provide housing for local need.

‘In our letter to the Duchy, we have asked Prince Charles to look at what we are saying on our website Homes4Locals.com,’ says Aran Jones. ‘He is in a position to help create some real momentum to the existing public discussion on these vital points, and it would be a great shame if he chose instead to add to the problem, and to risk becoming known as the Buy-to-Let Prince.’
